Cable cars & chocolate bars

Well actually chocolate on sundaes at Ghirardelli Square after a cable car ride from downtown and a walk down twisty and steep Lombard Street. We also visited a hands on science museum earlier.

Golden Gate

Right after breakfast Thursday we headed over to the Golden Gate Bridge with views of the city, the bay and Alcatraz Island (which Will is seen photographing in a photo below). It was a beautiful fog-free morning.

Gold, jelly beans and the Golden Gate

After panning for gold we traveled to the Empire Mine near Grass Valley, California: it started in the mid-1800's and refined its last bar of gold in 1957. Then we headed west to San Francisco, stopping enroute at the Jelly Belly factory for a tour (and free samples). Our roommate on the trip is Will's classmate Noah and his dad and he and will demonstrated the hats we had to wear during the tour. We then continued to the City by the Bay crossing the Bay Bridge from Oakland and later Will and I walked fron our hotel to Aliotos Restaurant at Fisherman's Wharf where we consumed wonderful Italian seafood dishes while watching sunset over the Golden Gate Bridge.

Gold!

Our 2nd day began with a long drive into the Gold Country of the Sierra foothills, where we all got rich by panning for gold in the South Yuba River just downstream from a massive covered bridge that now carries just foot traffic in a state park.

Sacramento wanderings....

From the airport we went straight to the California State Railroad Museum and then off to the State Capitol where Will and his classmates played paparazzi as Governor Arnold walked down the hall from his office to the press room. We also visited Sutter's Fort and then Will and Bob had dinner at Joe's Crabs along the Sacramento River.

SD to SACTO

We made it.

Departing is such sweet sorrow

6:15 AM and our shuttle driver waves bye-bye.
